It all started with seatbelts. Odd, perhaps, for the origin story of St. Louis' residant zombie-raising, gun sporting, female badass to begin with a two inch strip of protective gear, but odd or not, seatbelts marked the beginning of a rather transformative period in Anita Blake's formitive years. Unfortunately for an eight year old Anita, her mother neglected to wear a seatbelt while driving one day, and then Anita didn't have a mother anymore. This singular event wounded Anita's heart, as the loss of a parent at such a young age is wont to do, and for Anita, the wound remained ever open. Innocence, once lost, is difficult to regain, and Anita lost hers, early. Her father remarried a well-meaning but radically different woman, a choice which only emphasized to Anita the solitary nature of her existance. To make matters more difficult, things around the young girl simply had a hard time staying dead. In order to attempt to combat this, Anita's grandmother pushed the girl into Catholisism, though this ultimately did little good to stymie Anita's growing powers.

Eventually, Anita left home to go to college. Despite an ill-fated love affair (in which she was reduced to little more than a notch on a bedpost), she did quite well for herself in school, and graduated with a degree in prenatural biology. The raising of the dead, however, never stopped for academia, and when Anita found herself in the working world, she decided to put her talents to use, at last. This choice led her to work for Animators Inc., a local company specializing in the raising of the dead for primarily legal reasons (will disputes and the like). Though unconventional as a career choice, being an Animator ment that Anita was no longer raising zombies willy-nilly, as her powers finally had a place they could be focused on a regular basis.

Anita's unique combination of prenatural expertise and necromantic ability made consultation with police almost inevitable, specifically, the devision dealing with supernatural violent crime. Her friendship with the head of that devision, Dolph, and the lead investigator, Zerbrowski, was to come to define much of her dealings with the law. Her relationship with the police, even on a retainer basis, eventually aroused the interest of some of St. Louis' supernatural powerplayers, and when someone decided to go on a vampiric killing spree, the head vampire of the city came to her for aid. Through some dashing detective work, Anita was able to discover the murderer, but not before becoming embroiled in the vampire politics of St. Louis. Fangedface politics are a dangerous game, however, and Anita's involvement with a human atachee to the vampires eventually caused the head of the city to kill him. Reluctantly, therefore, Anita aided a vampire named Jean Claude in a coup, though the motivation seemed to be mostly revenge on her part.

Soon after this incident, Anita was approached by an eccentric millionaire named Harold Graynor to perform a human sacrifice in order to raise a very old zombie. Anita, naturally, refused. As coincidence is rare in Anita's world, a string of violent crime would eventually point toward Harold's involvement, along with that of notorious voo-doo queen, Dominga Salvador. The two captured Anita and attempted to force her to perform the sacrifice, and raise the zombie. In response, Anita killed two bodyguards, and raised the entire graveyard, though once a horde of zombies was at Anita's disposal, she simply had her undead friends kill her enemies. It is at this point that she simply turned around to find herself in Wonderland.
